AMY KANG: Dental Assitant
From Childhood Contributions to Professional Aspirations
As a kid, I took great pride in being able to help my family, siblings, friends, and everyone that I possibly could. My earliest memories are filled with moments of lending a helping hand, whether it was assisting my parents with household chores, tutoring my younger siblings, or simply offering support to friends in need. This inclination to help was not just a fleeting phase but became a cornerstone of my character and deeply influenced my worldview.
As I’ve grown older, I’ve come to live by the principle that those who can help others should do so. This belief, rooted in my childhood experiences, has only strengthened with time. It is my firm conviction that communities are stronger when everyone pitches in to help one another. The collective effort to support and uplift each other fosters a sense of unity and resilience that is unmatched.
Throughout my life, I’ve found both joy and pride in tutoring, volunteering, and helping my family, peers, and the dental clinic where I regularly shadowed. Each of these experiences has enriched my life in unique ways. Helping at the dental clinic has been particularly rewarding, as it has provided me with insights into the profession, I am passionate about and reaffirmed my desire to pursue dentistry.
My choice to pursue dentistry is a direct reflection of my desire to give back to the community. My mother’s struggles with dental issues, which prevented her from enjoying cold foods, and the even worse conditions experienced by her parents, have deeply affected me. The elderly members of my church often grapple with daily tooth pain, highlighting the need for accessible and compassionate dental care. Additionally, I have personally benefited from regular cleanings, the guidance of a good dentist, and the care of an orthodontist. These experiences have made me keenly aware of the importance of dental health and the privilege of having access to such resources.
Determined to make a difference, I attended the University of Michigan on the pre-dental track. My academic journey has been driven by the aspiration to provide quality dental care and alleviate the suffering of those in my community. The education and training I have received are not just preparations for a career but a means to fulfill my mission of service.
When I’m not working or volunteering, I enjoy spending time with my family and indulging in my hobbies. Family: The Heart of My Existence
Family is at the center of my life. I'm blessed to be a wife to my incredible husband, Will, and a proud mom to our wonderful son, Avrey. Our Yorkie, Addison, is truly our forever baby and brings so much joy to our home. In my free time, I love soaking in moments with my family, getting lost in audiobooks, and unwinding with a good TV show. Every part of my life, both at home and work, is driven by love, care, and connection.
My Journey in Dentistry
My journey in dentistry began in 2013 as a dental assistant. After several wonderful years, I started dental hygiene school, but life had a different plan. I live with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and face daily challenges with chronic pain, which has taught me to slow down and truly cherish each moment. Though I couldn’t complete hygiene school, I shifted into front desk roles and later found my passion in insurance coordination.
I've worked in both dental and medical settings — from chiropractic offices to midwifery care — gaining a deep understanding of insurance that I now bring with me to Barrington Smiles as the office manager. Every part of my journey has led me to where I’m meant to be. I’m so grateful to be at Barrington Smiles serving our patients with care and compassion.
